Dating agencies are a small, but growing sector of social care provision for people with intellectual disabilities. The research reported here is the first to explore, with 10 specialist agencies in the UK, why they were set up, how they operate, the barriers and problems they encounter and their success or otherwise in facilitating relationships for people with intellectual disabilities. A strong case is made for the proliferation of such services. Historically, it was difficult for adults with intellectual disabilities to form relationships of their own choosing [ 1 , 2 ].

Negative attitudes towards their suitability for, and capabilities regarding, relationships and sexuality led to eugenic practices such as institutionalization including segregated living , forced abortion and compulsory sterilization in many countries around the world [ 3 , 4 ]. Adults with intellectual disabilities were simply not considered to have the same emotional, psychological or social needs for self-fulfilment as other people [ 5 ] leading to a denial of their human right to express their sexuality in any form [ 6 ].

Although there have been improvements in recent years, many people with intellectual disabilities remain sexually disenfranchised [ 7 ]. Salt et al. Romantic relationships are not the only kind which are difficult to achieve.

Aiding Love dating agency created for adults with learning disabilities in Herne Bay

A dating agency designed to give adults with learning disabilities a better chance of finding love is set to be launched near Herne Bay. Care worker Holly Leadbetter decided to create Aiding Love after witnessing the difficulties many of her clients experience when trying to meet new people. She says that, currently, adults with learning disabilities living across the district have few opportunities to socialise with new groups of people and meet potential suitors.

Ms Leadbetter knows of several couples who have met because they have been supported by the same companies, or attended the same day services or schools – but says many have not been so fortunate. The care worker founded the dating service – which will be open to people across the Canterbury district and Thanet – after one of her clients suggested the idea.

Untold Australia. Credit: SBS. This first installment focuses on the work of relationship coach Liz Dore, who works with young people with intellectual and learning disabilities. In Love Me As I Am , we follow Dore over a number of weeks as she coaches a group of six mostly somethings in the art of love and relationships. Dating is a fraught enough territory for anyone to enter, but for people with disabilities, many of which can inhibit social skills, it can be terrifying, so opportunities to meet people are often limited.

Dore, the only relationship coach of her kind, starts things off gently, with some conversation starters; for some of the group, even the most casual chat can be a wrench. The group also includes Johnny, who has Down Syndrome.

Dating agency staff felt this was most likely because family and staff carers of women with learning disabilities were more wary of them going on.

Dating agencies for adults with learning disabilities are a vital service that help individuals have an active, engaging social life but more are needed across the UK. This research was part of a wider project exploring support for adults with learning disabilities to find loving relationships. Across the UK there are just a dozen such dating services, with only one covering London and none in counties such as Kent and Cornwall. They are all run as charitable organisations and rely on funding to operate.

The researchers profiled 10 of these services, nine in England and one in Scotland, speaking with staff, their users and their families, to inform the findings. Overall, they found that the agencies play a major role in helping members have an active social life. This ranges from facilitating social events for people to meet one another such as discos, meals and outdoor events, through to direct matchmaking between people for one-to-one dates.

All agencies also supported people with learning disabilities by acting as chaperones on initial dates and providing ongoing support and advice if relationships are formed. Furthermore, success is defined differently to a standard dating agency. Members seeing the act of dating itself as a success in itself, while dates that led to friendships, rather than relationships, are also usually seen as a positive outcome.

However, there are challenges running these services. One of main challenges is the gender imbalance of people that use the service, with far more men on the books than women. Dating agency staff felt this was most likely because family and staff carers of women with learning disabilities were more wary of them going on dates, perceiving the risks to be higher for them compared to men.
